Hearing problems and kids
The normal hear ability can be affected negatively at time of birth, in baby years or in childhood by several factors.
There are two kinds of hearing loss; conduction loss and perception loss.
In case of conduction loss the inner ear works normal, but there is a problem with the external or the middle ear by which the sound can`t reach the inner ear.
Conduction loss is light or moderate, most of the time it`s temporary and can often be treated.
The causes of conduction loss are:
- Wax;
- Little objects, like beads or little pieces of food can stop the sound or damage the eardrum;
- Swimmersear;
- Inflammation of the middle ear.
Perception loss is caused by a disturbed function of the cochlea or the auditive canals to the brains and is often congenital. It can also be caused by loud noise, medicines which are damaging for the hearing ability.
Perception loss can be light or very serious and can damage every frequency range or just some of them.
For example, it`s possible that high sounds can´t be heard, but the lower noises can be heard normal.
It´s really important to act vigorously if you have the feeling that your child isn`t hearing properly. Early diagnosis and intervention can have a dramatic impact on the child’s future development. Children learn by repeating and they learn to speak by repeating words.
It has also shown that children with hearing problems have often fear of failure and feel insecure.
Hearing aids do help, but can’t solve the problem, in a noisy room you can’t hear anything with a hearing aid. Imagine what this feels like for a child if it’s at a playground, a classroom etc. An induction loop system can be a good solution for the child.
To understand this, and to help a child with all kind of means, is the first step to make the child feel happy.
